Music has always been an important component in the worship at First Presbyterian. Our worship services are rich with diverse congregational songs in the form of hymns, responses, and praises. Our choirs, children's choir and special choirs enhance our worship experience with choral music written by composers from the distant past to the latest available.
Throughout the year, special music is offered at both services featuring performers including pianists, chamber ensembles, contemporary bands, vocalists, and choral groups.
Most members of the Music Department are also an active part of the life and wellness of the Church, not only as singers/ringers, but in many other areas as well, serving as Elders, Deacons, and committee members. Friends and members of the Church are encouraged to join.
The Choirs for both Sunday services are strong and integral parts of the spiritual life at First Presbyterian. They are composed of many talented and dedicated volunteer musicians. The weekly commitment and the strong spiritual devotion of each member to singing God's praises are the foundation of these groups. These choirs are open to anyone high school age or above with no audition being necessary other than a desire to sing.
The choirs practice in the Choir Room on the Upper Level (3rd) at 6:30pm (1st service) and 7:30pm (2nd service).
The Celebration Ringers are a 5-octave bell and handchime ensemble that has long been an integral part of the congregation as well as the Lancaster arts community. The group rings approximately one Sunday each month in both services and participates in the annual Candlelight Tour in Mid-December.
The Celebration Ringers rehearse Thursday from 5:30-7:00pm in the Belfry on the Upper Level (3rd) with Director Nathan Ogg.
New members are welcomed into this ensemble as openings allow. Some experience in handbell ringing and music reading is helpful.
Children's Music is a project of paramount importance, both to the Music Department and the congregation as a whole. All children attending Sunday school will participate in weekly music learning and activities as a part of The Opening before joining individual classes. These students will occasionally share songs and lessons with the congregation.
Instrumental Musicians (members and guests) who wish to share instrumentally are also of great value to the First Presbyterian family. Brass and String musicians in particular, are often called upon. High School aged students taking private lessons in piano or other instruments are encouraged to participate with church ensembles.
The absence of a particular ensemble does not indicate a lack of need or desire. If you are interested in participating in a style of music not currently represented (i.e. Contemporary Christian, Gospel, Barbershop, etc.) please contact Nathan Ogg at email@example.com.
